Bi-Fold Door Size Guide: Opening, Panels and Hardware

By George House/19,Sep,2025

Bi-fold door size is not one number. The structural or rough opening, finished opening, frame or track, panel set and usable passage are different dimensions. A door described as 36 inches wide may be intended for a nominal opening rather than measure exactly 36 inches across the manufactured leaves.

Use this guide to organize early size options, measure the opening and request the hardware data needed for quotation and shop drawings. Always confirm the exact product system before framing, finishing or ordering.

Understand the Size Terms

DimensionWhat it describesWhy it matters
Structural or rough openingThe opening formed by framing or masonry before the complete door system is installedAllows for frame, track, tolerances, packing and fixing conditions
Finished openingThe measured opening after jambs, floor finishes and adjacent finishes are establishedControls the final available width, height and squareness
Frame or track sizeThe outside dimensions and operating length of the supplied systemMust fit the opening and provide the required fixing support
Panel sizeThe manufactured width, height and thickness of each leafAffects weight, hinge positions, folding stack and handling
Clear passageThe unobstructed opening remaining when the doors are foldedUsually smaller than the nominal opening because the stacked panels occupy space

The same distinctions apply across other door systems. Review the standard door measurement guide before recording the schedule, and use the manufacturer’s section drawing to identify exactly where each dimension is taken.

Common Bi-Fold Door Configurations

Interior closet bi-fold doors are often sold as two-panel sets for relatively narrow openings and four-panel sets for wider openings. Catalogs commonly group products around nominal opening widths such as 24, 30, 32 or 36 inches for a two-panel set, with paired sets used for wider openings such as 48, 60 or 72 inches. These figures are planning references, not universal finished or rough-opening requirements.

Custom systems can use different panel counts and proportions. Taller, wider, glazed or solid panels change the load on pivots, hinges and tracks. Exterior folding systems also need project-specific structural, weather, threshold and performance details that are outside a simple closet-door size table.

How to Measure the Opening

  1. Identify whether you are measuring the structural opening, finished opening or an existing frame.
  2. Measure width at the top, middle and bottom, then record the smallest value and the variation.
  3. Measure height at the left, center and right from the finished-floor datum.
  4. Compare diagonals and use a level or laser to check plumb, level and floor variation.
  5. Record skirting, architraves, shelving, drawers, handles, switches and other obstructions.
  6. Confirm the required installation allowance, track support and adjustment range with the supplier.

For a new framed opening, coordinate the door details with the interior door rough-opening guide. Do not subtract a generic allowance without checking the selected frame, jamb, track and floor condition.

Panel and Hardware Selection

Panel Material and Weight

Painted board, timber, aluminum-frame glass and composite panels have different weights and stiffness. Match the panel mass and thickness to the rated hinges, pivots and track. Check edge construction where hardware screws into the leaf.

Track and Threshold

Some closet systems are top-guided with a floor pivot, while other products use a bottom track or guide. Record the floor build-up, track recess, transition and fixing substrate. Where an unobstructed passage matters, confirm the final threshold and stacked-panel projection rather than relying on the nominal door width.

Folding Direction and Access

Show which side each panel set stacks toward. The folded leaves should not block closet drawers, internal pull-outs, switches or the main circulation route. If the project uses a decorative surface-mounted concept, compare its operation with a dedicated bi-fold barn door system instead of assuming the hardware is interchangeable.

Common Sizing Mistakes

A frequent mistake is ordering from one width and one height measurement even when the opening is tapered or the floor is not level. Another is treating the leaf dimensions as the required opening dimensions. Panels need operating gaps, hinge clearances and space for the pivot and track components, so the sum of the visible leaves does not necessarily equal the finished opening.

Also check where the opening will be in the construction sequence. Plaster, tile, timber flooring, skirting and jamb liners can all reduce the measured space. If dimensions are taken before those finishes are installed, record the allowances on the drawing rather than leaving the installer to estimate them. For replacement work, inspect the fixing substrate and do not assume the existing track position can be reused.

Bi-Fold Door Schedule Checklist

  • Opening mark, room, quantity and intended use
  • Structural opening, finished opening and finished-floor datum
  • Frame, track, panel count, panel size and folding direction
  • Clear passage and folded-stack projection
  • Panel material, finish, weight and edge construction
  • Pivot, hinge, guide, handle and soft-close requirements
  • Floor, ceiling or head support and fixing substrate
  • Adjacent shelving, drawers, skirting and electrical conflicts
  • Shop drawing, sample, installation and adjustment requirements

Confirm the Exact System Before Ordering

A reliable bi-fold door schedule connects the site opening to the supplier’s frame, track, panel and hardware data. For a wider comparison of door materials and operation types, see our project windows and doors guide.

Send the opening schedule, site dimensions, drawings, panel finish, hardware requirements and destination information before production release. You can contact George House Material for quotation and shop-drawing coordination.
