An LED retrofit can reduce connected lighting load and maintenance work, but the result depends on the existing electrical system, operating hours, fixture condition, light levels and control strategy. Historic hotels add another layer: visible changes, drilling, wiring routes and fixture appearance may need design-team or preservation approval. A reliable plan begins with an audit and a room-by-room schedule, not a generic savings percentage.
Audit the Existing Lighting System
Record every luminaire type, quantity, lamp and ballast or driver, input wattage, operating hours, switching method and maintenance issue. Measure existing illuminance where the task requires it and note dark areas, glare, failed fittings and emergency-lighting interfaces. Photograph decorative fixtures and identify any components that must remain visually unchanged.
Annual lighting energy can be estimated from connected watts × operating hours ÷ 1,000. Use the same rooms and hours when comparing options. This creates a project baseline without promising a fixed payback or energy reduction.
Choose the Retrofit Method by Fixture

The U.S. Department of Energy’s solid-state lighting resources distinguish replacement lamps, retrofit kits, luminaires and controls. The appropriate route should be checked for each existing fixture rather than applied mechanically across the property.
Protect Historic Character and Existing Fabric
Keep original shades, pendants or decorative housings where the project brief requires them, but confirm that the retained assembly can safely accept the proposed source and driver. Plan cable routes, access panels and control devices to limit visible intervention. Any claim that an installation is “reversible” should be supported by the actual fixing and wiring detail.

Specify Light Quality and Controls
- Delivered lumens and distribution for the actual fitting
- Correlated color temperature and color consistency
- Color-rendering requirement for finishes, food, artwork and guest rooms
- Glare, flicker and dimming behavior at the proposed control range
- Driver location, access, ambient-temperature limits and replacement method
- Emergency, fire-alarm, key-card, occupancy and building-control interfaces
- Manual override and operation after power or network interruption
Do not assume every LED lamp works with an existing dimmer, transformer or control protocol. Request a compatibility statement for the exact source, driver and control device. Wireless systems may reduce new control wiring, but gateways, batteries, commissioning, cybersecurity policy and long-term support still need coordination.
Compare Cost With a Defined Baseline
Compare equipment, access, labor, wiring, controls, making good, mock-ups, commissioning and disposal. Then model energy and maintenance using documented wattage, hours, tariffs and replacement assumptions. A simple payback can be useful, but it should not replace checks on lighting quality, compatibility and heritage impact.
