The right type of screen door depends on the opening, operating pattern, exposure, frame, mesh, hardware and maintenance plan. A screen is primarily a ventilating barrier against insects; security, weather resistance, pet resistance and air-filtration performance require products specifically designed and tested for those purposes.
Specify the opening before choosing a screen door
Record the opening width and height at several points, frame material, sill and track condition, handing, available swing or stacking space, and the main door configuration. Coordinate the screen with the project door and window schedule. A replacement insert may use an existing frame; a new assembly may require a complete framed unit and installation details.
Mesh selection affects visibility, ventilation, insect exclusion and resistance to pets or impact. Compare aperture, wire or yarn material, coating, openness, attachment method and replaceability. A smaller opening can exclude smaller insects but may also reduce airflow and daylight. Request a physical sample rather than relying on a generic material name.
Common screen door types
Hinged screen doors
A hinged unit suits an entrance with enough swing clearance. Check hinge side, closer force, latch alignment, threshold, wind exposure and conflicts with steps, walls or the primary door. Specify reinforcement and hardware appropriate to the door size and expected use.
Sliding screen doors
Sliding screens are commonly coordinated with patio-door tracks. Confirm rail profile, panel thickness, roller adjustment, handle clearance, drainage and removal access. Use the sliding patio door guide to coordinate the complete opening rather than treating the screen as an isolated panel.
Retractable screen doors
A retractable screen stores in a head or side cassette. Verify cassette dimensions, guide tracks, pull-bar location, tension adjustment and service access. Wide openings may need paired units or a product-specific configuration.
Magnetic mesh screens
Magnetic mesh panels can suit light-duty openings where the attachment surface is compatible. Check the fixing method, center closure, bottom clearance and resistance to wind and repeated traffic. They should not be represented as security doors.
Security screen doors
A security screen is a complete assembly, not simply stronger-looking mesh. Request the applicable test reports for the frame, infill, fixings, hinges and locking system together. Coordinate egress, emergency release and local code requirements with the project team.
Storm and combination doors
Combination units may accept interchangeable glass and screen panels. Their weather, structural and thermal performance depends on the specified product, installation and interface with the primary door. Do not assign energy savings without product ratings and project-specific analysis.
Custom and specialty screens
Arched openings, large panels, French doors and unusual substrates may require custom frames and hardware. Supply field dimensions, templates, finish samples and interface details, then approve the shop drawing before manufacture.
Screen door RFQ checklist
- Opening mark, location, quantity, measured dimensions and handing.
- Door type, frame profile, mesh material, color and replaceability.
- Track, threshold, hinges, rollers, closer, handles, latch and lock requirements.
- Wind, coastal, pet, insect, security or accessibility conditions where applicable.
- Shop drawings, samples, test reports, installation method, maintenance and spare parts.
Shortlist the operating type first, then compare complete assemblies on the same specification. Include photographs and measured openings with the project quotation request.
