Door and window materials should be selected as parts of complete opening systems. Wood, aluminum, uPVC, steel, fiberglass and composite products each offer different appearance, section size, finish, maintenance and fabrication possibilities. None is automatically best for every climate, opening type or project budget.
Compare the exact leaf, sash, frame, glazing, seals, hardware and finish proposed by each supplier. Material names alone do not establish thermal, air, water, structural, acoustic or security performance. Use project-specific data and samples before choosing the system.

Separate the Material from the Complete System
A wood door can use an engineered core and wood veneer, while an aluminum window may include thermal isolators, gaskets, steel reinforcement and insulated glass. Ask what each visible and concealed component is made from. The answer affects appearance, finish repair, fastener compatibility and replacement parts.

Aluminum can produce controlled, relatively slender profiles and durable factory-applied finishes. Finish selection should state the coating type, color, sheen, pretreatment and exposure category. Coastal and industrial environments may need different protection. Confirm hardware fixing and isolate incompatible metals where the approved detail requires it.
uPVC Door and Window Systems
uPVC systems commonly use multi-chamber profiles with steel or other reinforcement in selected members. Request the exact profile series, wall class, reinforcement, corner-weld quality, drainage, gaskets and hardware reinforcement. Large dark-colored frames in high solar exposure require particular attention to supplier size limits and movement allowances.
Color may be integral, laminated or coated depending on the product. Approve the surface sample and confirm how cut edges, welds and repairs will appear. Do not assume that every uPVC profile has the same structural or thermal result.

Steel, Fiberglass and Composite Systems
Steel profiles can suit visually narrow frames and robust assemblies, but the coating, weld finishing, drainage and thermal detail need review. Fiberglass and composite products cover many different constructions, from molded door skins to pultruded window frames. Ask for the actual composition instead of accepting “composite” as a complete specification.

Compare Whole-Product Performance Data
Frame material influences performance, but glazing, spacers, seals, reinforcement, size and operating type also matter. Compare the exact configuration rather than assigning a single value to a material family.
Other project requirements may include structural pressure, air leakage, water penetration, acoustic performance, safety glazing, fire rating or security classification. Request the applicable test standard, size and configuration, and check that submitted evidence covers the proposed assembly.

Map each opening by orientation, shelter, rain, ultraviolet exposure, salt, humidity and interior moisture. One project may reasonably use different materials or coating systems in different locations. Review cleaning access and the availability of replacement gaskets, glass and hardware.
Request written maintenance instructions before approval. Include safe cleaners, inspection points, lubrication, drainage cleaning and finish-repair procedures. A lower initial price can be misleading if the quotation omits finish, hardware or maintenance scope.
