The cost of granite countertops is project-specific. A usable budget combines the selected slab lot, required slab yield, fabrication details, templates, supports, delivery and installation. Fixed national price bands can become outdated quickly and often compare different scopes, so this guide focuses on the information needed for a traceable quotation.

Use a complete cost model
Build the estimate as a set of separate quantities and responsibilities. A practical model includes slabs and usable yield, fabrication, edge work, cutouts, reinforcement, supports, templates, finishing, packing, delivery, installation, sealing where specified, protection and agreed spares. Keep taxes, duties and site work visible rather than burying them in one unit rate.
Measure area and calculate slab yield
Start from approved countertop plans, not only cabinet length. Calculate each piece, backsplash, waterfall end and upstand, then record thickness and finished edge length. Raw area is not the same as purchased slab area: seam positions, vein direction, defects, cutouts and slab dimensions affect how pieces nest.
- List every finished piece with length, width, thickness and quantity.
- Identify exposed edges, wall edges, appliance gaps and unsupported overhangs.
- Add the fabricator’s justified allowance for cutting, matching and breakage risk.
- Approve a cutting layout before treating material yield as final.
Stone selection changes the material allowance
Granite varies by quarry, lot, slab size, thickness, finish, availability and commercial grade. Inspect or digitally approve the actual slabs, record slab numbers and note fissures, resin, mesh, repairs and color range. A rare pattern or lot that needs extensive matching may require more material than a consistent layout.

Fabrication is more than cutting rectangles
Fabrication pricing depends on piece size, handling, finish, edge profile, build-ups, mitered returns, curves, drain grooves, polished openings, cutout geometry and reinforcement. Sink and cooktop model numbers matter because templates, corner radii and support details differ.
Edges, seams and cutouts
Record edge profile and finished length by piece. Mark seam locations and the expected matching approach. State whether sink cutouts are drop-in, undermount or integrated with additional stone pieces, and identify faucet, dispenser and accessory holes. Changes after cutting can be expensive or impossible.
Support and cabinet readiness
Countertops depend on level, secured cabinets and coordinated appliance openings. Complete the kitchen design and cabinet layout before final templates. The fabricator should define support requirements for spans, overhangs, joints, narrow strips and openings.
Include site conditions and delivery
Survey access from unloading point to installation area. Note stairs, lifts, corridor turns, protection, weight limits, working hours and lifting equipment. Clarify who removes existing tops, disconnects services, repairs walls, supplies temporary protection and accepts the substrate before templating.
Compare quotations line by line
Issue the same drawings, finish, slab assumptions and return schedule to each bidder. Normalize units and identify exclusions. One quotation may include templates, sink polishing and installation while another covers fabricated stone only. Keep allowances provisional until the slabs and cutting layout are approved.
