Kitchen cabinet cost cannot be reduced to one reliable price per cabinet or one national range. Layout, dimensions, construction, fronts, hardware, finish, accessories, delivery and installation all change the quotation. A cabinet BOQ and consistent specification make supplier prices comparable and reveal exclusions before an order is placed.
Start with measured scope
Issue a dimensioned plan and elevations showing walls, finished floor levels, ceiling, windows, doors, columns, services and appliance locations. Identify base, wall, tall, corner, island and specialty cabinets by mark. A small kitchen with complex fillers, panels and accessories can require more work than a larger but repetitive layout, so floor area alone is not a pricing basis.
Use the kitchen design process to freeze circulation, appliance clearances and service coordination before requesting a production quotation. Later layout changes can affect boxes, doors, worktops, services and installation together.
Cabinet construction cost drivers
- Box construction: framed or frameless configuration, panel material and thickness, back construction, edges, joinery, shelves and interior finish.
- Fronts: slab, Shaker, routed, framed or inset details; substrate, veneer, laminate, paint or stain system.
- Hardware: hinge opening angle, drawer runner capacity, soft-close function, handles, lifts, pull-outs and organizers.
- Visible panels: end panels, fillers, scribes, plinths, cornices, light rails and appliance surrounds.
- Performance: moisture exposure, load, cleaning, fire or low-emitting-material requirements where applicable.
The Kitchen Cabinet Manufacturers Association describes the basic construction difference between framed and frameless cabinets. Neither label establishes price or quality by itself. When certification is required, name the applicable program and verify the listed product; KCMA’s quality certification evaluates cabinets against its referenced performance standard.
Finish, style and samples
Door style and finish affect tooling, preparation, coating, color control and rejection risk. For example, a Shaker cabinet has rail-and-stile details that differ from a flat slab. A white finish also needs an approved color and sheen sample, not only the word “white.” Request a full-size sample door when appearance is important.
Compare quotation boundaries
Require each supplier to identify what is included and excluded: design development, shop drawings, samples, manufacturing, packaging, freight, duties, unloading, storage, installation, protection, adjustment and waste. State the delivery term, destination, currency, tax treatment, quotation validity, payment schedule and programme. Avoid comparing a factory-gate cabinet price with a delivered-and-installed scope.
Value engineering without losing control
Value engineering can simplify widths, reduce one-off panels, standardize hardware or place premium finishes only where they are visible. Any substitution should be recorded against the original specification, with samples and performance documents reviewed before acceptance. The lowest initial quotation may not include the same scope, service access or replacement hardware.

- Cabinet mark, type, quantity, width, height, depth and location.
- Box, back, shelves, fronts, edges, interior and exposed finish.
- Hinges, runners, handles, organizers, lighting and service cut-outs.
- Fillers, scribes, plinths, panels, trims and interfaces with appliances or worktops.
- Drawings, samples, certifications, mock-up, packing, delivery, installation and warranty.
Send the completed schedule and drawing set with the cabinet quotation request. Ask suppliers to price the same revision and return a clear deviation list.
