Modern entrance doors need to work for the people who use them each day. Before ordering, confirm how occupants enter and leave, how visitors are admitted, and how the selected lock operates when its network or power supply is unavailable. Record those decisions with the leaf, frame, hardware and installation requirements.
This guide focuses on daily operation and access coordination. Use the modern exterior door design guide for materials and overall system selection, or front door ideas for appearance and configuration references.
Define Who Uses the Entrance
Start with the access situations the entrance must support. A household member arriving with shopping, a visitor waiting outside and a contractor attending during an agreed period may need different arrangements. Decide whether someone inside will admit visitors, whether temporary access is needed, and who will manage it.
Review opening from both sides. Check the reach to the handle, the space to stand, the leaf swing and the route past furniture or a secondary screen door. Ask the project designer to confirm the required clear passage and inside release under the applicable accessibility and fire requirements. The leaf frame and opening size guide explains the measurement references; the actual assembly and hardware determine usable passage.
Record whether the entrance is a single hinged leaf, a pair or a pivot system. For pairs, identify the daily operating leaf and how the second leaf is released when needed. For a pivot door, confirm operating space and the selected lock arrangement with the system provider.
Match the Lock to the Leaf and Frame
Confirm Preparation Before Fabrication
A lock specification needs the exact model and the door details it fits. Check leaf thickness, backset, bore or mortise preparation, the strike location, handle clearance and the reinforcement or fixing detail required by the supplier. Backset is the distance from the leaf edge to the lock centre. A photograph of a handle cannot establish these dimensions.
The Schlage BE489 preparation document illustrates model-specific coordination of the leaf and opposing strike. Use the approved documents for the selected model; its preparation details do not establish compatibility with every modern door.
| Interface | Confirm with the selected providers | Record before ordering |
|---|---|---|
| Leaf and lock | Thickness, backset, bore or mortise, fixing support and interior trim clearance. | Exact model and approved preparation drawing. |
| Frame and strike | Strike position and fixing, bolt engagement, seal compression and alignment with the closed leaf. | Matching frame detail and installer acceptance. |
| Operating hardware | Handle or pull function, inside release, hinges or pivot and any closer affecting operation. | Hardware schedule identifying each function. |
| Paired or multipoint assembly | Daily leaf, secondary leaf release and compatibility of the complete locking arrangement. | Assembly-specific approval from its provider. |
| Glass and panel details | Space for hardware and reinforcement without conflict with glazing, panels or concealed components. | Coordinated elevation and section. |
| Powered interfaces | Separate requirements for lock, strike, reader, intercom and doorbell, where included. | Interface list with supply and installation scope. |
Keep Performance and Appearance Requirements Together
Ask the door provider to confirm the hardware arrangement within the selected assembly’s documented performance and warranty conditions. A material label alone does not establish security, weather resistance or fire performance. Use the climate and exterior door material guide for exposure questions, and the decorative front door guide for panel and glazing choices that must be coordinated with the hardware.
Coordinate Doorbells Intercoms and Wiring
Show a doorbell, reader or intercom on the entrance elevation before fixing its position. Check the approach, waiting space, reach, viewing direction and clearance from the moving leaf. Coordinate it with lighting, glazing, screens and nearby finishes. Confirm any exterior exposure requirements in the selected device documentation.
Identify which devices use batteries and which require a building supply. Ask the responsible installers to define cable routes, connection points, power supply locations and access for servicing. Where a connection crosses a moving leaf, the door and hardware providers need to approve the transfer arrangement. Final cable and electrical details belong in the selected system documents and the qualified installer’s scope.
Separate the door supplier’s preparation from electrical and network work. Record who supplies each device, prepares the leaf or frame, installs the wiring, configures the system and verifies the combined operation. An unresolved interface should be clarified before production or closing the surrounding finishes.
Separate Network Power and Battery Failures
Confirm Operation Without a Network
Ask which functions work locally and which need an internet connection, a hub or a cloud service. Entry at the door, remote unlocking, notifications and scheduled visitor permissions can have different dependencies. Confirm what happens to existing permissions during an outage and whether changes can take effect while the device is offline.
For example, Schlage’s Encode series support describes keypad or physical-key operation without Wi-Fi, with limits on connected functions. That example does not establish the behavior of another lock or access platform. Ask for a demonstration of the functions included in your selected system.
Confirm Low Battery and Depleted Battery Access
Check where a low-battery warning appears, who will respond to it and how the selected model provides access if its batteries are depleted. A warning visible only in an app may not reach every user. Confirm any physical-key or emergency-power provision against that model’s instructions.
The Schlage Encode BE489 product page describes battery operation, a low-battery indicator and an included physical backup key. Keep this as a scoped example. The selected supplier must confirm the actual backup method and demonstrate it at handover.
Confirm the Effect of Building Power Loss
Building power loss may affect a reader, strike, intercom, router or power supply differently from a battery lock. Ask the system designer to document the state of each component and how occupants can enter and leave under the agreed conditions. Confirm backup power, inside release and recovery behavior where those functions are part of the design.
Any required emergency release and permitted locking arrangement must be confirmed for the actual building and applicable rules. Do not choose a fail-safe or fail-secure arrangement from a generic article or assume every device changes state the same way.
Plan Visitor Access and Ongoing Care
Identify who owns the access system and who can issue, change or revoke visitor permissions. If the selected platform offers timed credentials, confirm its time settings, expiry and offline behavior. Decide how a visitor will reach someone when the intercom or remote service is unavailable. Temporary access should follow the agreed occupancy and management requirements.
Include key custody, battery replacement and device servicing in the handover plan. Retain the selected model’s cleaning and maintenance instructions, warranty details and service contact. Have alignment or repeated latch resistance assessed by the installer; adjustments, lubrication and component replacement should follow the relevant supplier instructions.
Test and Hand Over the Complete Entrance
Agree the commissioning procedure with the responsible providers. Have qualified personnel demonstrate the selected assembly under normal operation and the approved outage scenarios. Record the method and outcome for the installed model. Any unresolved inside-release or access requirement needs a project decision before acceptance.
| Condition | Demonstrate under the agreed procedure | Record at handover |
|---|---|---|
| Normal daily use | Entry, closure, latch and lock engagement, inside release and leaf clearance. | Installed models, adjustment outcome and acceptance. |
| Visitor access | The chosen admission method and permitted temporary access functions. | System owner, management responsibility and expiry rules. |
| Network unavailable | Confirmed local access and the limits on remote functions or permission changes. | Functions available offline and user instructions. |
| Lock battery depleted | The supplier-approved backup method for the selected model. | Backup provision, custody and battery response responsibility. |
| Building power unavailable | The agreed component states, inside release and backup provisions. | Approved design reference and witnessed outcome. |
| Recovery and servicing | Return to normal operation and access to routine service items. | Recovery instructions, maintenance documents and support contact. |
Keep these operating checks with the physical installation record. The exterior door installation and flashing guide covers the opening and weathering interfaces. A successful device demonstration cannot establish that the frame fixing, threshold or perimeter sealing has been completed correctly.
Confirm the Order Before Production
Release the entrance order against a coordinated schedule and the required project approvals. Each unit should have an identifier connecting its doorway, hardware, devices and drawings. Confirm the following before fabrication:
- Opening references, leaf configuration, handing and the daily operating leaf where applicable.
- Exact lock, strike and operating hardware models with accepted leaf and frame preparation drawings.
- Required assembly performance documents, finishes, glazing and the approved inside-release arrangement.
- Device locations, power and network dependencies, approved connection details and each provider’s scope.
- Model-specific offline and backup operation, visitor management and the responsible system owner.
- Agreed installation and commissioning scope, acceptance records, maintenance documents and unresolved-item decisions.
If an interface remains undecided, identify the affected unit and obtain the missing confirmation before releasing that work. Record changes against the approved drawing and hardware revisions so the ordered door, supplied lock and site preparation refer to the same selection.
Coordinate Your Entrance Door Requirements
George House Material supports project door and window coordination, including product requirements, drawings and samples, production follow-up, quality checks and packing. For an entrance enquiry, provide the opening schedule, drawings, hardware or access-system references, quantities and installation location.
Send your entrance door requirements with the information available and identify any unresolved power, access or installation interfaces. The quotation scope should distinguish door supply and preparation from electrical work, network configuration and final commissioning.
