Choosing among the many types of windows is not only a style decision. The opening method affects ventilation, cleaning, screens, hardware, safety and the usable space beside the window. Glazing, frame construction, seals, drainage and installation then determine how the complete unit performs in the building envelope.

Start with operation and room use

Record the desired view, ventilation pattern, privacy, cleaning access and furniture zone for each opening. Check whether a projecting sash could conflict with a path, balcony, blind or worktop. Where regulations apply, verify guards, restrictors, safety glazing and emergency escape requirements with the project team rather than assuming a window type automatically complies.

Common types of windows

Casement windows

A casement sash is hinged at the side and commonly operated by a handle or friction stay. It can direct air into a room, but the sash projection, hardware grade, restrictors, insect screen position and wind exposure should be confirmed before selection.

Awning and hopper windows

Awning windows are top-hung and open outward; hopper windows are bottom-hung and usually open inward. They can serve high-level or compact openings, but drainage paths, cleaning access, curtains and headroom need to suit the chosen direction.

Sliding windows

Sliding sashes save adjacent space and can simplify screen placement. Compare the clear opening, track depth, roller access, drainage, interlocks and air-seal design—not only the overall frame size.

Single-hung and double-hung windows

Hung windows use vertically moving sashes. A double-hung arrangement can support upper and lower ventilation, while a single-hung arrangement has fewer moving parts. Confirm balance mechanisms, sash removal method, screen configuration and reachable operating height.

Fixed and picture windows

Specialty shapes and combined assemblies

Bay, bow, corner, clerestory, roof and custom-shaped windows can solve specific daylight or architectural goals. They also add junctions, support requirements and waterproofing interfaces. For combined assemblies, confirm mullion design, structural limits, drainage continuity, glass sizes and whether factory or site assembly is intended.

Compare the whole-window performance

Frame material alone does not establish performance. Ask for values and test reports for the complete proposed configuration, including frame, glass, spacer, seals and hardware. The relevant metrics depend on location and specification, but may include thermal transmittance, solar heat gain, visible light, air leakage, water penetration and design pressure.

  • Match glass make-up to energy, safety, acoustic, privacy and appearance requirements.
  • Confirm that quoted values apply to the proposed size, operation and glazing—not a different reference unit.
  • Review drainage and pressure-equalization details together with sill pans, flashings and perimeter seals.
  • Coordinate insect screens, blinds, handles, restrictors and automation before profiles are released.

Size the opening, not just the product

Published standard window sizes and average window dimensions are useful early references, but an order should use surveyed openings and approved details. Separate structural opening, frame size, installation clearance and visible glass size.

Check sill height, head level, wall build-up, reveals, insulation continuity, flashings, internal finishes and exterior cladding interfaces. Also document measurement responsibility and the datum used, especially when openings are irregular or finishes are incomplete.

A practical window schedule

For each mark, record room, quantity, handing, operation, frame finish, glass make-up, safety treatment, screen, hardware, restrictor, performance values and interface details.
